The Department of Theatre and Film at 69ÂÜÀò presents Reginald Rose’s classic dramatic play, 12 Angry Jurors. In this story, 12 ordinary people must decide on the guilt or innocence of a teenager accused of murder. It looks like an open-andÂ-shut case until one person casts doubt and calls for a deeper examination of the facts.
This production explores the power of moral courage, inviting audiences to witness how a single vote can ignite change. To amplify the play’s timeless relevance, our staging of 12 Angry Jurors trades in the original 1950s setting for the pivotal cultural landscape of the 1990s. This choice adds a new layer of complexity to the iconic play, allowing us to explore how a jury—a diverse cross-section of society—grapples with prejudice, personal experience, and the nature of reasonable doubt in an era of rapid social and technological change.
The play is directed by Dee Dee Stephens, an actor, comedian, producer, and arts educator whose artistic voice is a unique mix of drama and dark humor. Stephens consistently champions stories that foster radical love and radical art as a force for positive social change. Her directing approach is rooted in collaborative creation, prioritizing processes like "fun runs" where actors are empowered to explore the text and contribute to the blocking. By blending the actors’ instincts with her directing vision, she empowers the cast to take ownership of their characters and deliver an authentic and resonant performance.
