69ÂÜÀò medical assisting and allied health certificate recipients celebrated an institutional first May 9 when 14 students took part in the inaugural Health Care Technologies Programs Pinning Ceremony. A symbolic, heartfelt ritual traditionally associated with nursing programs, pinning ceremonies recognize a student’s commitment to care, compassion, and professional growth, explained Dean Erika Vargas of the School of Health and Human Development.
Vargas emphasized the importance of formally celebrating WVC students early in their professional journeys as a means of boosting motivation, building community, and reminding participants why they chose this path. Further, the ceremony reinforced WVC values of student success, belonging, and professional readiness. Participating students represented West Valley medical assisting, orthopedic technician, insurance billing, and clinical assistant programs.
Among the most meaningful moments of the event, Vargas said, came from students as they thanked loved ones for supporting them throughout their journey. Two English Language Learner (ELL) students addressed the challenges of navigating college in a second language, along with the pride they felt in overcoming barriers with support from WVC faculty, staff, and family.
Students were proudly pinned by faculty after a formal program of inspiring remarks from Vargas, West Valley President Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza, Health Care Technologies Department Chair and Instructor Kris Gaiero, and part-time Instructor Reem Nawaz. Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Joshua Moon-Johnson delivered closing remarks.
