Program Notes:

troy davis
Troy Davis is the Director of Instrumental Music and Jazz Studies at 69蹤獲 in Saratoga, California. He is also the Camp Director at Hayward La Honda Music Camp, Director Emeritus of the Oakland Municipal Band, and has served on faculty at Boston University, San Jos矇 State University, San Francisco State University, College of San Mateo, and Aragon High School.
 
Dr. Davis was honored as the CMEA Outstanding Music Educator of the Year for 2017, as a "Distinguished Music Educator" by Yale University in 2011, received the Outstanding Achievement Award in Music Education from Boston University in 2020, and the coveted Oak TREE Award for exemplary service to 69蹤獲 in 2020.
 

He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music education from Boston University, Master of Arts in Teaching with a music education focus from Notre Dame de Namur University, and Bachelor of Music in oboe performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Publications include Empathy and Deep Listening in Jazz Improvisation, a book chapter in the Oxford Handbook of Care in Music Education and Self-Assessment in Jazz Improvisation, an article in the Psychology of Music journal.

Dave Eshelman
is Director Emeritus of Jazz Studies at California State University, East Bay. Dave led the CSU East Bay Jazz Ensemble on four European concert tours (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007) as well as one tour to Brazil (2001). In the summer of 2002, Dave led an All-Star Big Band Tribute to West Coast Jazz in concerts at the Verona Jazz Festival in Italy and at the Vienne Jazz Festival in France.

Among those performing in that band were Bud Shank, Pete Jolly, Teddy Edwards, Joe La Barbara, Bobby Shew, Andy Martin, Bill Perkins, and Dick Nash. He currently conducts the Jazzschool Studio Band at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, California.

As a trombonist he has been a featured soloist with the big bands of Ray Brown, Joe Henderson, Tito Puente and Gerald Wilson. His quartet CD release Mystique features John Abercrombie, guitar, John Patitucci, bass and drummer Peter Erskine. He has written, conducted and recorded three CD projects for Philippe Kahn featuring jazz greats John Abercrombie, Alex Acuna, Richie Bierach, Terence Blanchard, Alan Broadbent, Patty Cathcart, Don Cherry, Paul Contos, Peter Erskine, Charlie Haden, Billy Hart, Dave Liebman, Ron McClure and John Patitucci.

Dave publishes with the Neil Kjos Music Company, iJazz Music and Walrus Music Publishing. His compositions and arrangements have been recorded and performed by bands throughout the United States and Europe.

The Jazz Garden Big Band features some of the most active freelance musicians in the bay area. 2018 marked the 40th anniversary of the 1978 Jazz Garden Big Band premier to a standing room only audience at the Eulipia Caf矇 in downtown San Jose. Over the four decades since, it has performed in dozens of bay area jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals. The band has backed guest artists such as Mel Torme, Joe Henderson and Bruce Forman in concert and on its critically acclaimed cds: The Jazz Garden (1982) Deep Voices (1988) When Dreams Come True (1993) and Milagro's Journey (2001) The band recorded and performed the suite Temperature Rising (1998), commissioned by San Jose Jazz Society.
